My first experience was thanks to Maria Martello and Anthony Salce for inviting me to dinner at Thirty Eight Chairs in North Carlton. As always the company was fabulous and the food was amazing. And then I had the great opportunity to share Thirty Eight Chairs South Yarra with friends – equally impressed with the menu. Note: The South Yarra location is currently under an upgrade – so they have moved down the street into a temporary location – cute and tight – but the food is just as good!
While you’re making your reservation on Dimmi, check out their Instagram, website or Facebook. Or deliver at home with Uber Eats, Deliveroo or Foodora. But honestly, its a great date or friends evening out. Get off that couch.
I have never gone wrong with any pasta – all home made, fresh and al dente. My favorite is Reginette Ricce al Ragú di Anatra – their version of curly pasta, slow cooked duck ragú, porcini with shaved pecorino. The service is wonderful, warm, friendly and always willing to make a (great) suggestion. Specials are available daily and often run out cause they’re so good an in limited supply. In addition to a great wine list, the bartender has a few special drinks. And for those of us with gluten allergies- they have gluten free pasta.
The Carlton North location is bigger than South Yarra. I love the South Yarra space, small and intimate, but you feel like you’re in a little bubble of your own. Easy to have a conversation and enjoy great food and drink. Be sure to make a reservation or take your chances on getting a table without. If they can accomodate you they will.
Gino Forlano grew up on the Amalfi Coast and honed his restaurant skills in hospitality throughout his life starting in Salerno and then on to London; finally landing in Australia 16 years ago, where he continued to develop his culinary style. In 2012, he opened “Thirty Eight Chairs” in honour of his age. There were 38 chairs in the first version of the restaurant and while the number of available seats has increased over time, it is and always will be, an intimate setting which lends itself to friendship, good conversation and a lively atmosphere.
