Sompong Thai Cooking School – Bangkok Market Tour and Cooking Class

This was my first trip to Bangkok on my way to a holiday along the coast. I was so glad to find Sompong Thai Cooking School through the web. The reviews on TripAdvisor were amazing and this experience did not disappoint.  And their email communication before class was prompt and clear. They answered all my questions and accommodated a change of date. They set high expectations and met every single one!

Irin is a great instructor!

I signed up for two days of classes. Irin and Tram are so organized – the menus for each day are available on their website. They accomodate any dietary needs. Their directions to the cooking school by taxi or metro are perfect and as promised the crew is waiting for you when you exit the metro.

I admit, Asian cuisine has not been in my repertoire so I was looking forward to learning from locals and I LOVE a good market tour. We learned so much about ingredients that make Thai cuisine what it is. But they also offered advice on substitutes or packaged items we could get at home. The vendors in the market were lovely and patient. All of this within easy walking distance of the cooking school.

Sompong Thai Cooking School has two floors of cooking classes going on. Everyone is warm and lovely and patient. And so organized! I treasure the mini cookbook that includes all the recipes from the classes I took as well as those taught on other days. We were placed at teams of 3-5 and worked together to create a full luncheon for all of us. I highly recommend the morning as it is likely to be cooler than an afternoon class.

Class was terrific not only because of the tour, instruction and delicious food, but my fellow students were from all over the world. Coming and going from retirement, vacation, families and friends – foodies all!

This blog is dedicated to art, artisans, food, travel and markets because I love the journey of discovery. I enjoy finding local artists, markets, food and supporting the local economy wherever I may be. And now I have chosen to share my discoveries with you!
