Waiheke Island – New Zealand

Who says it is cloudy and rainy on the islands of New Zealand!? Well everyone.

But for Connie and me – we were just lucky (see Connie has her sunnies on!) Sure it rained – but every time we were outside the sun came with us. We enjoyed a bit of Auckland, but really enjoyed Waiheke Island and Matakana north of Auckland. Read on for photos, great eats and some amazing beaches.

Waiheke Island did not disappoint. We took the ferry over and enjoyed the quick 45 min ride. As we disembarked (boat lingo) it started pouring. No matter – public bus was waiting and a short 10 minutes later we were at The Oyster Inn – a great suggestion from Connie. Lunch was AMAZING! Fresh oysters, whipped ricotta w roasted beats, and crispy skin fish with profiteroles and salted caramel sauce. Oh yes and wine. The food and service were perfect. And half way through lunch – out came the sunshine!

In the middle of lunch – out came the sun! And on the bus for some wine – in the sunshine!

Stonyridge Winery is not to be missed. Especially on a clear sunny day – on their deck overlooking the farm. The bus will drop you off right in front and the short walk up the drive worth it! AND the platter of “nibbles” was terrific. After all we had lunch 90 minutes before! 🙂

Onetangi Beach was a lovely end to Waiheke Island. Quiet, serene, lapping water and beautiful shells along the beach. A wonderful cafe off the beach, The Boathouse Cafe & Bar is great to warm up with a hot drink and read the paper.
